SPIE Photonics West 2018 – a Review

SPIE Photonics West is the world’s largest annual event for the photonics, laser, and biomedical optics industries. It consists of three topical conferences, two exhibitions, over 70 special events and more. With over 23,000 attendees and over 1,300 exhibitors, Photonics West is the largest it has ever been.

A Review of Photonics West 2018

SPIE Photonics West 2018 was held on January 30 -  February 1, 2018 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.  Allied Vision exhibited in both North and South Halls, with a 10’ x 20’ (3 m x 6 m) booth in each.  We debuted a new booth that garnered attention with its vibrant colors and LED lighting.

The demos in this booth were also eye catching as we showcased one of the many image processing features in our new 1 product line, powered by ALVIUM technology.  We had a 130 series camera capturing live images with the multi region of interest feature applied. Split into four quadrants, each quadrant of the image had a different image enhancement applied demonstrating the power of Allied Vision’s ALVIUM chip. The other demo compared two of our Manta cameras, one equipped with a CCD sensor and the other with a CMOS sensor.  The two cameras were subjected to varying exposure times highlighting the differences of dynamic range, temporal dark noise and saturation capacity.  The conclusion detailed how the CMOS sensor outperformed the CCD sensor in varying lighting conditions.

In the South Hall, we had another appealing demo in our booth.  We demonstrated multispectral imaging with several Allied Vision cameras: a Mako G-131C with blue filter, Manta G-235C, Manta G-145BNIR with RG850nm filter and a Goldeye G-008 with 1450nm BP filter.  All these cameras were imaging the same objects, which were stacked on top of one another.  Each camera displayed each of the items differently, as imaging in different wavelengths and blocking certain colors via filters can provide a plethora of solutions for multispectral applications.

We found Photonics West to be a successful show as we had many engaging discussions with attendees, while simultaneously learning about latest advancements in various types of technologies.  This iteration of Photonics West continues to confirm why it has become one the largest shows in North America.
